The human eye is able to send a clear image to the brain by focusing incoming light on the retina. This image is then transmitted from the optic nerve to optical centers in the brain. Light entering the human eye is refracted, or bent, first by the cornea and then by the lens. Refractive error occurs when this process is altered such that the light does not focus clearly on the retina.  This may be due to abnormalities in the shape of the cornea, the lens, or in the axial length of the eye.
